Over the years there have been plenty of changes to the baseball some more important than others all having some effect on the game itself.
The basic requirements of all baseballs is that they form a sphere made by yarn wrapped tightly around a small sphere of cork or rubber or similar material and then covered with two stripes of white horse hide or cow hide. The ball cannot weight less than 5 ounces and it cannot weigh more than 5 1/4 ounces. It can measure no more than 9 inches in circumference.
The baseball did not always have such rules. Some of the first balls were made from whatever materials were available at the time. They even wrapped string around a walnut. They even wrapped stones with a cloth or socks. Because past periods used what was available it meant the balls were of difference size and weight..
Modern rules require the manufacturer to make a ball with a center of cork at a weight of 0.5 of an ounce. The ball then has to be in cased with two thin rubber layers from 2.86 to 2.94 inches. The rubber has to be one black band and one red band that do not weigh more than 7/8 of an ounce. They call this the pill.
The pill is machine wound under high consistent tension with a 121 yards of four ply blue gray and 45 yards of three ply white wool yarn is used. A further 53 yards of three ply blue gray wool yarn is used. Then a 150 yards of fine white polyester cotton blend yard is the final coating on the ball.
The yarn center is coated with a rubber cement before the hide is applied to the ball. The two pieces of elongated figure eight shaped cow hide is dampened to allow the hide to stretch. The ball is then wrapped in the hide. All stitches are done by hand. The ball has exactly 216 raised stitches. This takes 88 inches of red thread. The final step is the rolling of the ball for 15 seconds to produce flat seams and to make sure they are even.
The balls are then tested for physical size and liveliness. A dead ball will not fly very far and a over active ball will fly to far. The balls are chosen at random and fired from an air gun at a speed of 85 ft per second. The target is a wall of ash the same material the bats are made from.
The tested ball must bounce back at 0.514 to 0.578 of its original speed. They must also maintain their shape under pressure and not distort more than 0.08 of an inch while being tested under 65 lbs of pressure.
In 1921 pitchers complained that the ball was to smooth and they could not get a good grip on it. The umpires then began rubbing the balls with their hands before the game to help prepare the balls.
This practice still goes on today. The official umpires rub the ball with Lena Blackburnes Rubbing mud. This is smooth but creamy solution has a fine grit in it that prepares the baseball for play. The ingredients are a closely guarded company secret. There is no question that it works. The results are seen in every base ball game.
In 1974 the league changed the outside cover of the baseball from horsehide to cowhide. This change was done because the league recognized that horse hide was becoming harder to get. Since 1974 there have been no changes to the baseball.

Just recently one of there balls sold at an auction for $3 million dollars. Are you wondering what was so special about this ball? It was the ball Mark McGwire hit for his 70th and last home run of the season.
Baseballs remain fairly standard with very few changes occurring. After all why change a good thing. Perhaps in the future as we become more high tech we could see some new changes to the baseball.
