Greg Maddux makes his third try at 350 wins as the Padres travel to Philadelphia to face Phillies ace Cole Hamels. Maddux is showing a reverse platoon this season as he’s holding lefties to a .120 batting average, but righties are hitting .301 against him. The Phillies could throw five lefties against Greg tonight. Hamels is one of those lefties, and he comes into the game batting .308, while opponents are hitting just .201 against him.
With the suspension of play in Chicago Monday,More Brand Hats, Tampa Bay travels to Baltimore to battle the Orioles for first place in the AL East. Jason Hammel faces Garrett Olson. Hammel reduced his walks this season from about 1 every two innings to about 1 every three innings, and the difference shows in his better ERA. Olson didn’t impress during his cup of coffee in 2007, but his minor league numbers tell a different story. He’s posting a 1.85 ERA at AAA.
Cleveland hosts Seattle with two pitchers with sub-3.00 ERAs on the mound. Carlos Silva is showing his typical control,Killahbeez, issuing just eight walks so far. Fausto Carmona is not. He’s walked 22 in 28 innings, but he’s kept his ERA down by giving up just five extra base hits, and only one of those for a home run.
The Brewers trail the Cubs by two games in the NL Central as they open a three-game series in Chicago. Milwaukee gets Ben Sheets back after he missed a start. Sheets shutout the Cubs over 6 1/3 innings on opening day and only allowed runs in one of his starts so far. Mike Cameron returns from his 25-game suspension tonight as well, giving the Brewers more outfield depth. Jason Marquis takes the hill for the Cubs, and is keeping his ERA down despite getting hit hard. The opposition is sporting a .356 OBA and a .456 slugging percentage against the right-hander.
The Oakland Athletics try to extend their lead over the Angels as Greg Smith takes on Joe Saunders. Oakland won all four games Smith started, and the Angels are 5-0 when Saunders takes the mound. Something has to give.
Finally, the pitcher to watch this season is Tim Lincecum. He’s working on a 16 1/3 innings scoreless streak, and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a game this season. Aaron Cook has been the savior for the Rockies much like Tim for the Giants. Both home runs he’s allowed came in road games this season and his ERA is two runs higher away from Coors.
Enjoy!
