Thumbs up Watercolour Masterclasses | Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair | DAAF 2011

Aboriginal watercolour artists from central Australia will conduct a series of workshops at the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair tapping into the traditions of the great Arrernte artists Albert Namatjira and Wenten Rubuntja. The workshops, supported by Charles Darwin University, cheap coach purses give the opportunity to explore Australian landscape art from the perspective of the Hermannsburg School of painting inspired by Namatjira and continued by many of his relatives. Celebrated Hermannsburg artist Marie Abbott was influenced by her older Wholesale Replica Gucci Sunglass Online brother Clem Abbott who grew up watching Namatjira paint. Marie and her grandson Jacob Hayes will present the workshops demonstrating the contemporary techniques of a truly central Australian tradition. Both artists are involved with Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra – Many Hands Art Centre which was established in Alice Spring in 2003, in part to help keep the traditions of the Hermannsburg School alive. Direct descendants of both Albert Namatjira and Wenten Rubuntja are involved with the centre including Albert Namatjira Jnr cheap gucci sunglass and Mervyn Rubuntja who both remember their grandfathers painting at Hermannsburg and at the artists camp in Alice Springs. The impact that Albert Namatjira had on Australian landscape painting made him the most well known Aboriginal Australian of his time leading to his special status as the "first Aboriginal citizen". Since his death in 1959 the Hermannsburg School of painting has declined in influence but not in its vibrancy and energy. The contemporary works of the Ngurratjuta Iltja Ntjarra watercolourists carry on a great tradition that portrays the unique landscape of the West MacDonald Ranges in hues and tones that resonate with Australians in a very special way.
