Stylish philanthropist Suzanne Rogers spends count
Stylish philanthropist Suzanne Rogers spends countless hours planning her namesake fashion-based fundraiser. The inaugural event last year showcased Oscar de la Renta; this season, Rogers presented Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig. The sold-out event, held in Toronto on Tuesday, raised $950,000 for a variety of children’s charities, including the Herbie Fund at the Hospital for Sick Children. Here, Rogers shares her wardrobe diary from the week leading up to the event.
Tuesday March 29 I do love fashion but some days
short prom dresses, getting “dressed up” isn’t as fun as it’s made out to be! However, it is all to promote my annual fashion fundraiser and that’s a good thing. Woke up at 4:30 a.m. to get ready for the first of two television segments on Citytv. For the live segment with Dina Pugliese on Breakfast Television
ball gown dresses, chatting with Tony from L-Eat about the menu, I wore a cream Alexander McQueen dress. (I love that colour and the stretch knit fabric because it’s easy to throw on, especially at that time of day. About 40% of my wardrobe is McQueen because his fabric and style suits me.) Had an hour in their green room to get some work done then changed into another cream dress (this time from Marchesa’s spring 2011 collection) to do CityLine, where the focus was more on the clothes Marchesa would be bringing to the event. What a relief to switch into my T-shirt and black sweatpants at the studio afterwards and head home! Reviewed the table and fashion show seating
cheap long prom dresses, again, because there are a couple of last-minute sponsors to accommodate. Later, we had a small birthday party at the house for my two-year-old nephew, so I wore knit pants and a black Valentino T-shirt. At home I practically live in black Valentino pants or Ala?a leggings. They’re comfortable, especially with the kids around; pants make it easier to get down to the floor with them. But for events, I prefer dresses because all you have to do is put one on, add shoes and you’re done.
Wednesday March 30 Tonight was one of those nights: three events in a row. I wore a black knit Ala?a dress that has his signature ruffled skirt. I often search for vintage Ala?a pieces on eBay because like McQueen, his clothes suit me and are easy to wear. The first stop was the opening of the new OnexOne offices ― a charity that does wonderful work with children around the world and that both Edward and I are very involved with. Next was a Chanel reception where I met with the Guy Schreiber, the president of Chanel Canada. And finally, I went to LG Fashion Week to support my friend David Dixon, a great Canadian designer. The shows were running late and I had to find a place to lean up against ― too much time in my Nicholas Kirkwood heels! They fit me well, so it wasn’t the shoes: It was that I had been standing for six hours.
Thursday March 31 After the kids went off to school, I had a meeting to review the place settings for the private luncheon I’m hosting before the event; Marchesa sent a couple of different sets of their new fine china for Lenox for us to mix and match. I put on a favourite Louis Vuitton dress from the recent resort collection. Feminine and floral are two of my favourite things, and it’s lovely and spring-like. I’ll wear it with low heels in Italy in June, when my husband and I finally take that long-overdue honeymoon! Then I changed into a black Victoria Beckham dress from last year. Had to turn down an invitation to the Costume Institute’s Met Ball next month. It’s my first invitation to the famous gala, but it just doesn’t work for our family schedule. We have a longstanding trip with friends and after that, my daughter Chloe and I are headed to Paris to celebrate her 14th birthday. They grow up so fast.
Friday April 1 Wore my typical at-home uniform of black Ala?a tights and a white Valentino blouse. A little breathing room today ― used it to take a last look at the seating and signage for the event. That evening, changed into another black Victoria Beckham dress and joined Edward and the kids as we hosted a box at the Blue Jays opening game ― 350 people.
Saturday April 2 In my at-home uniform again. I am often photographed in amazing shoes, but I kick off my heels the moment I get in the door and walk around the house barefoot. My boys are young and I wouldn’t want to step on any little feet
grad dresses! I don’t wear jewellery at home, either
A-Line prom dresses, so when I pick them up it doesn’t scratch them. Managed to get in a half-hour evening session on the Power Plate (I love it
grad dresses 2011, and it keeps me in shape!). No shoes, just sport socks.
Sunday April 3 The Marchesa dress came last night
prom dresses 2011, and it’s just what I’d wanted, a faint blush colour with embroidery and tulle ― exquisite. It needs some adjustment, though ― parts of it are a little too sheer for me! To go with it, I picked out my “lucky” shoes by Sergio Rossi, the same pair I wore for the Oscar event last year. Put on a black ruffled Moschino dress to go downtown to visit the Marchesa team and have their seamstress do the alteration. I watch the models preparing and don’t envy them having to walk the runway. Posing for photographs is one thing, a runway in front of hundreds of people is quite another.
Monday April 4 Prepared for another Citytv shoot, this time for a special (airing in the fall) on bringing the Marchesa collection to Toronto. Wore a print floral dress by my favourite new designer
cheap short prom dresses, Mary Katrantzou. It has just hit me: the event is tomorrow. I know the committee has worked hard and everything’s in place, but it’s still nerve-wracking.
It will be a long day, starting at 9:45 a.m. to meet with Georgina and Keren for several media interviews, then home for the private lunch with the designers, honorary chair Sarah, Duchess of York, and our top three sponsors. I’ve planned several outfit changes, all Marchesa. For morning interviews: a cream ruffled dress from Summer 2011; for lunch, an embroidered white jacket with a stunning skirt by Kim Ironmonger of Valencienne in Toronto. Not much time after that to prepare for the evening. Their gowns are works of art and I will love wearing one, but I must admit I’m looking forward to tomorrow morning, when I am back in my black knit pants and T-shirt.
