Legacy INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service)
The United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), now referred to as Legacy INS, ceased to exist on March 1, 2003, when most of its functions were transferred from the Department of Justice (DOJ) to the newly created Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The INS maintains somewhere around 250 points of entry into the U.S. Travelers who have arrived at one of these ports are first inspected by INS agents, who have specific interview questions and other procedures they engage the traveler in. |
