Helped by a blaze of publicity, one ex-manager in Dorchester took it upon herself to lease back her shop, rehire her staff and reopen under a new, if familiar-sounding, name.
Wellworths South Street, Dorchester, Dorset

Shopability Clever Claire had placed a pound zone at the front of the shop and, unlike many of the pound shops I've been to, she'd stocked up on recognised brands such as Colgate, Mr Muscle and Palmolive. I loved the fact that there was a pet food and accessories area and a small DIY department, cutting out the need to schlep to an out-of-town superstore. I was also impressed by the tidiness of the shop, which oozed a pride in merchandising that I don't recall from the latter days of its predecessor.

Shop! Mary Portas reviews Wellworths in Dorchester
Mary Portas reviews Wellworths in Dorchester and welcomes a worthy substitute for Woolies.
Of all the retail casualties to date, it was the demise of Woolies that caused us to grieve most deeply. And while the loss of 800 shops and 30,000 jobs made headline news, it was the emotional bond we had built with the brand that touched us most. Woolworths started a century ago with a single revolutionary idea: everything under one roof and all priced at a penny or sixpence.
Good for life's 'incidentals', priced fairly.
Verdict If I were you, jimmy choo (http://www.eslouboutinshoes.com/jimmy-choo-shoes-c-7.html), Claire, I would take what you've started to the next level. The Americans do 'household retailing' brilliantly, presenting products in abundance. Little of what you carry has a sell-by date so stock it high, giving us the feeling that we're getting more of a bargain. Then speak (http://www.peakjacket.org/) to your customers more personally. This is your shop and your vision, let them hear your voice through handwritten notes rather than trying to copy the cheap pound-shop promotions. Good for you, Claire. You have done what many well-paid executives never managed. I really hope it works out.

Online The internet is flooded with mentions and write-ups of this 'good news' story, a triumph over adversity. But there's no official website as such.
The windows When a store as large as this leaves a high street, the effect on the surrounding shops is evastating, so I am sure the fact that Wellworths has replaced Woolies has been embraced by the whole town. From the look of the windows, manager Claire Robertson has roped half of them in to make posters for her shop. Go, girl!

Was I being served? I spotted Claire the minute I walked into the shop - and I suspect she clocked me, too. The simple fact that she was on the shop floor, merchandising and selling, is what makes her different from many managers, and explains in an instant why she, and not one of her contemporaries, had the courage to do what she's done.
What it sells General household goods
Star rating 3.5/5
It was the first chain to sell its own branded goods, goldwin ski wear (http://www.goldwinskijacket.org/), reducing its dependence on suppliers, and progressively took ownership of the toy, gift, sweet and music markets, until the brand was eventually squeezed out of existence by supermarkets and the internet. Woolies was relegated to a position of 'shop of last resort' for a nation whose shopping habits had changed irreversibly. The saddest part of the story is that today it's the pound shops that are doing well, with Poundland and the 99p Shop reporting profit surges of 50 per cent and more. That was Woolies' market - why didn't they take it?
Did I buy? Yes. A Perudo game for my son and a batch of cotton reels and needles. We also filled our faces at the Pick'n'Mix. Fabulous.

Today I am leaving for a two week vacation to Europe. My long lost college roommate and I are going to be hitting up Spain and Italy and in Italy Vlad will be meeting up with us for a Gondola ride or two! I am super excited for this vacation and this time will actually be vacationing. We are lucky enough to have someone who will write posts for me while I am gone, Nerdphanie! You all remember her as a guest blogger! Now she is signed on as a two week blogger to fill my spot. She will bring you lots of new bags and goodies to look at. I will be posting sporadically, but not my usual four or five posts a day
